In Cuero, Texas, a strong work ethic, commitment to service, and belief in education as a pathway to opportunity are values deeply woven into the community. The Garrison Scholarship reflects those principles, honoring the lifelong dedication of Donnie and Mary Sue Garrison to education, vocational excellence, faith, and community service.
Established to support students pursuing vocational or trade careers, this scholarship serves as both practical assistance and meaningful encouragement for Cuero students striving to build a successful future.
A Life Rooted in Work, Education, and Service
Donnie and Mary Sue Garrison became part of the Cuero community in 2002, bringing with them decades of experience across education, law, and public service. Their involvement in church and community organizations reflects a shared commitment to faith, service to others, and unwavering support for the communities they serve.
These values have guided both their professional journeys and their desire to give back—especially to students facing financial barriers to education.
Donnie Garrison’s Journey: From Construction to Educational Leadership
Donnie Garrison began his career at a young age in the construction industry, where he developed a deep respect for vocational work and the individuals who build and maintain the foundations of society. Recognizing that construction was not his lifelong calling, Donnie worked his way through college and transitioned into education.
He began as a Vocational Education Teacher and Coach, later earning advanced degrees that led him into administrative leadership roles. His career culminated in his service as Superintendent of Westhoff ISD, followed by his work as a contracted administrator at Cuero ISD’s Junior High campus after retirement.
Throughout his 30-year career in education, Donnie never forgot the financial challenges he personally faced while pursuing his degree—particularly the lack of scholarships and financial assistance available at the time. Those experiences now fuel his passion for supporting students who are willing to work hard to achieve their goals.
Mary Sue Garrison: Advocacy Through Law and Education
Mary Sue Garrison’s professional path began in the legal field, where she encountered many individuals striving to reach their educational goals despite financial hardship. Her experiences deepened her awareness of the real-world barriers students often face.
She later transitioned into education, dedicating 20 years of service before briefly returning to the legal profession. Even today, her continued interactions with young people reinforce her belief in the importance of financial support for students pursuing higher education.
Together, Donnie and Mary Sue have witnessed countless students with the desire and determination to succeed—but without the financial means to do so.
The Purpose of the Garrison Scholarship
In recognition of these challenges and opportunities, the Garrison Scholarship was established to support a Cuero student pursuing a vocational or trade career who has demonstrated a strong work ethic, perseverance, and commitment to personal growth.
The scholarship is designed to assist with the additional expenses of post-secondary education, allowing students to focus on developing their skills, completing their training, and achieving academic and professional success.
A Name That Represents Strength and Support
The word garrison traditionally refers to a military post established for defense and protection, while a scholarship represents financial support for education. Though different in function, both serve as pillars of stability and growth.
In this way, the Garrison Scholarship stands as a guardian of opportunity—supporting students as they build strong foundations for their futures through vocational and trade education.
Investing in Determination and Opportunity
The Garrison Scholarship is more than financial aid. It is a symbol of belief in students who are willing to work hard, persevere through challenges, and take pride in skilled professions that strengthen communities.
By investing in vocational and trade-focused students, Donnie and Mary Sue Garrison are helping ensure that future generations in Cuero have the encouragement, resources, and confidence needed to reach their full potential.
Empowering Students: The Cuero ISD Education Foundation
The Cuero ISD Education Foundation, founded in 2002 as a 501(c)(3) organization, proudly administers the Garrison Scholarship along with many other scholarships that support Cuero students.
The Foundation’s mission is to generate and distribute financial resources that enhance educational opportunities beyond traditional school funding.
